What is Niacinamide in Skin Care

What is Niacinamide for Skin

When you want to improve your skin’s health and appearance, you may be looking for products to help you reach your goal. Perhaps you have heard of niacinamide, but do not have enough information to make a decision. You can learn more about niacinamide, and decide if it is right for you.

What Is Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a derivative of Vitamin B3. It is an essential nutrient that provides many health benefits. One example is its benefits to the skin.

What Niacinamide Does In The Skin

Niacinamide builds new cells in a person’s skin. It makes the top layer of the skin stronger.

It is effective for repairing skin, too. It makes the skin less irritable, improves its texture, and increases hydration.

Niacinamide also protects the skin from stresses in the environment that otherwise damage the skin.

Why Is It Suitable For Aging Skin

While niacinamide is beneficial for people of all ages, it is especially useful for aging skin.

As niacinamide builds new, healthy cells, it protects the new cells. It can reduce the risk of damage from ultraviolet sun rays, toxins, free radicals, and pollution. As these environmental stresses increase wrinkles and fine lines in the skin, your skin can look younger and healthier.

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin issue for older individuals. When niacinamide increases the production of collagen, the dark spots can start to lighten. Instead of age spots, your skin tone can be clear and even. It can also improve skin that has become yellow during aging.

Aging skin is often dry. When skin becomes too dry, it increases the appearance of wrinkles, makes you look older, and may even produce discomfort. Niacinamide is an all-natural solution to dry skin. It absorbs quickly and easily because it is water-soluble. It does not produce the greasy effects common with many skin care products. While it helps your skin retain moisture, it also regulates oil production. It can prevent the sebaceous glands in your skin from producing too much oil, so your skin stays fresh, moist, and oil-free. Niacinamide also increases your skin’s protective barrier and it can improve the overall texture of your skin. If you are bothered by sagging, loose skin, you will start to notice a difference. Niacinamide builds up a protein known as keratin. This protein will help your skin become firmer and more attractive.

Learn about the Benefits

In addition to all of these anti-aging effects, there are other ways in which niacinamide benefits your skin.

There are many skin issues that are caused by inflammation. Blotchiness, acne, redness, and eczema are some examples. The anti-inflammatory effects of niacinamide can reduce or eliminate these issues.

The lipid barrier in your skin can increase with niacinamide. It can decrease water loss and improve your skin’s moisture content. Your skin can be smoother and healthier. When your skin is kept moisturized, its pores will become smaller.

If you experience problems with flaky or itchy skin, it can provide relief. Unlike many other cosmetic products, it can help your skin become soft and comfortable without oily residue.

Niacinamide has antioxidant properties. Not only can it protect your skin from damage, but it can also help repair the damage that has already occurred.

Skin care products with niacinamide are equally appropriate, and work equally well, for all skin types.

Some studies have shown niacinamide may decrease the risk of skin cancer.

How To Get Started With Niacinamide

If you have decided niacinamide will be a good addition to your skin care routine, you have a number of options. You can obtain niacinamide from a variety of foods, supplements, and skin care products. Consider what each has to offer, so you can choose the approach that will work best for you.

Many foods contain niacin. When you eat foods that are rich in this nutrient, your body converts it into niacinamide. Protein is one category. Some of the best sources are eggs, organ meats, white meat from poultry, and fish.

In the vegetable category, the nutrient can be found in lentils, legumes, green beans, and beets.

Brewer’s yeast is a good source of the vitamin. It can also be found in milk, fortified pasta, and fortified cereals.

Food is completely natural. Unless you have a dietary restriction or a serious medical condition, you do not need to hesitate to add these foods to your diet every day.

A second option is a wide range of skin care products. Popular options include daytime moisturizing creams and lotions, nighttime moisturizers, and serums. You will enjoy the chance to browse all the products that are currently available and choose the product you like the most. They are easy to use and can be used on a daily basis.

A third option is a dietary supplement. You can find many supplements available online, as well as in many stores. The amount of niacinamide in a dose, and how often it should be taken, varies from brand to brand.

Potential Risks

In most cases, health benefits do not come without risks. This is not necessarily true for niacinamide. While skin care products are completely safe and eating more foods with the vitamin is safe for most people, caution should be taken if you choose supplements.

When used according to directions, supplements are generally safe. However, some people may experience side effects including allergic reactions, liver problems, high blood pressure, excessive perspiration, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, or other problems. Serious side effects are rare, but they can happen. If you decide to use supplements, talk to your physician first. If he says niacinamide is appropriate for you, follow the directions on the package.

For nicer skin, niacinamide may be the right solution for you. You can have beautiful, healthy skin regardless of your age.

  • Thanks for this informational post. I haven’t heard of Niacinamide before, but now I understand how powerful it can be in terms of getting a glowing skin. I have one question though. Is it suitable for acne-prone skin?

Your very welcome Delyana. I am really grateful that you gained some new useful information in this article. To answer your question, yes Niacinamide is suitable for acne-prone skin. Niacinamide has anti-inflammatory properties and has proven efficacy when treating acne.

  • Sounds like a wonderful and important nutrient! Happy to know that many foods have Niacin, and they are made available conveniently from where I come from too.

I used to be skeptical about supplements but as I’ve grown a bit older, supplements are really an added layer of goodness on top of a healthy diet.

Dear Sam, It is, indeed. Also, Niacinamide as a skin care product is really beneficial. • Niacinamide seems like a good solution for all skin types, so it’s no harm to try the skincare product as an alternative. I believe not everyone has enough time to take care of that food with a high amount of niacinamide, so using skincare products is the easiest and most effective way for our skin.

Hi Matt, well balanced diet is the best you can do. Skin care products are powerful though. I use niacinamide myself and I can only recommend it. Thank you for your comment.

  • The benefits of Niacinamide sounds great. However, it is so difficult to decide when it comes to supplements and skincare products what it really is you need and in what quantities. You can only apply that much to your skin and can only take that many supplements, so it is hard to decide which ones should be given priority.

Is there perhaps a product that is of a more multipurpose nature e.g. a multivitamin that contains a sufficient quantity of Niacinamide to consider? When I go into my cupboard it looks like I own a pharmacy lol as I have lined up my vitamin D, Zinc, Vitamin C, Biotin etc. And those are just the supplements. Not even got to the skincare products yet haha.

The amount of niacinamide in a dose, and how often it should be taken will depend on the brand you have purchased. Follow the leaflet instructions. For example, I only use niacinamide as a skin care product as I already use a lot of other supplements. The best practice is definitelly good life style. I believe there are many multipurpose supplements to choose from.
