What Is The Best Natural Sunscreen – Top 10

What Is The Best Natural Sunscreen

There is nothing good about sunburns because it hurts and worse enough, you will have prematurely aged skin. Also, sunburns can result in health conditions such as skin cancer. However, with the best natural sunscreen, you can keep your skin protected from the sun. When it comes to sunscreen, the word natural means that the products are made using minerals shields such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These minerals help this natural sunscreen not to soak in your skin. Unlike the chemical sunscreens that make some people’s skin break out, the minerals in the natural sunscreen work best for most individuals. A good natural sunscreen will sit at the top of the skin and serves the purpose of blocking the sun. This article will major on some important subtopics related to natural sunscreen.

Importance of wearing sunscreen

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the United States, and yet it is the most preventable form of the disease. The ultraviolet radiation from the sun causes this form of cancer and one of the best ways to protect one’s skin from exposure to the sun is by use of sunscreen. Below are some of the reasons why it is essential to use sunscreen;

  • Sunscreen reduces your risk of getting cancer – It is important to wear sunscreens even on a cloudy day to help you decrease the risk of skin cancer.
  • It keeps your skin fresh hence keeping you look young – Exposure to ultraviolet radiation results in premature aging. By wearing sunscreen, you slow down the process of wrinkles development as well as leathery skin.
  • Sunscreen keeps your skin tone – Sunscreen prevents your face from developing brown spots and discolorations in the skin.

The difference between natural and artificial sunscreen

There are two significant sunscreen categories, namely chemical and physical. Usually, the word natural is not the best word to refer to the physical sunscreen since the chemical can as well be lab-made or naturally found. The modern sunscreens are made in the laboratory using compounds such as carbon that chemically absorb the ultraviolet rays. Physical sunscreens, on the other hand, are made using minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that help reflect the sun away from your skin.What Is The Best Natural Sunscreen

Mineral-based sunscreens or natural sunscreens are organic and the minerals used in making them have a history in skincare. The coated minerals help stabilize the ingredients in the sunscreen.

How do natural sunscreens work?

There are different basic types of rays present in the sunlight. The UV rays or the ultraviolet rays are the most damaging to the skin. As the sun shines on the earth’s surface, the UV rays that reach the surface include UVB and UVA. The UVB rays are the ones responsible for causing sunburns. They have, for a long time, played a central role in causing skin cancer including the deadliest form of cancer, malignant melanoma. The UVA rays, on the other hand, penetrate so deep into the skin and therefore result in premature skin aging and wrinkle formation.

Fortunately, the presence of natural sunscreens has made life easier by providing the means for people to save their skin and lives from serious diseases. Natural sunscreens are made using two minerals namely;

  1. 1. Zinc oxide
  1. 2. Titanium dioxide

These two components function like a mirror such that they block the sun from reaching your skin directly, and they do this by reflecting the harmful Ultraviolet rays. However, before using this sunscreen, it is recommended that you shake it well before every use. This is because this product contains natural ingredients, and therefore shaking ensures there is consistent protection. For instance, the Zinc oxide particles are supposed to be loose when applying to the face to ensure they are evenly spread on the skin.What Is The Best Natural Sunscreen

In terms of use, natural sunscreens have a label on them with instructions on how to use them. Usually, you can get instructions such as;

  • Apply it evenly onto the skin, which is dry, and let it sit for 20 minutes before going out to the sun. Reapply the sunscreen at regular intervals of two hours, especially after an activity like swimming, towel drying, or exercise.
  • Do not stay long in the sun.
  • For significant results, make sure to wear protective clothing such as sunglasses and a hat.
  • Make sure that the sunscreen does not get into your eyes.
  • In case of irritation, discontinue its use.

How to choose the right sunscreen

It is essential to read the label of the sunscreen before purchasing it because then you will know what is contained in it. The right sunscreen must have the following;

  • Broad-spectrum protection – A sunscreen with such a label will protect against both UVA and UVB rays, and in this way, you will be protecting yourself from both sunburns and skin cancer. This means that the two components, which are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are present in the sunscreen.
  • Sun protection factor (SPF) – This has to be 30 and above, and it is the number of protection achieved from the sunscreen against the UVB rays. A high number means higher protection.
  • Water-resistant – This helps the sunscreen stay in your skin for long even in sweaty conditions, especially when you are working out or swimming.

Is it safe to use homemade sunscreens?

It is not advisable to use homemade sunscreens because unlike the shop-bought ones that contain approved components, these sunscreens are only made using recipes and sometimes can be altered. In homemade recipes, you are not even sure if it conforms to the recommended proportions of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Moreover, testing is one of the processes the sunscreens made in the companies and sold in shops go through a process that does not happen at home. These are just a few reasons why it is not acceptable to use homemade sunscreens, but the list is not limited to this.

To sum up, natural sunscreens are one best types of sunscreens to use. Whether it is a cloudy or sunny day, this is important to wear because it protects the body from absorbing a lot of sun and eventually suffering from the UVA and UVB rays. Some benefits one gets from wearing sunscreen is protection against skin cancer and premature aging of the skin.

    A useful post and some nice tips here. I’m out on the water most weekends so do tend to get burnt a little even though I’m quite conscious of sun damage. I only use the regular store bought sunscreens so perhaps some of the natural or organic options might make better sense. Will take a look so thanks for the suggestions.

  • Ola,

    What a simple yet highly informative piece – there were some technical and chemical details in there like zinc and titanuium, yet I didn’t feel like I was in some classroom. Plus I now know what to look for when buying a sunscreen lotion.

    • ola.young

      Hi Femi, thanks for commenting on my post. Happy to hear that you don’t feel like in the classroom after reading it. Physical sunscreen is great protection and you are avoiding harmful chemicals. Take care and don’t forget to protect your skin when going on holidays.

  • Sometimes you can just feel how strong the heat is. I stay in the shade as much as I can, but when I water the plants and trees I spend a lot of time in the sun. It is interesting to read about the minerals that are used for the natural sun screens, and it’s very true that minerals have a very long history in the use of cosmetics. I like Raw Organics and the sport MIneral Stick. The prices look good as well. I sometimes use coconout oil as a moisturizer but also as a sunscreen (if I don’t have anythng else at home), but coconut oil only has 15 SPF. It’s time to get a 30 SPF, even now in the winter months – I live in the desert and the sun is still strong in winter here.

    • ola.young

      Hi Christine, If you don’t have to stay all day in the sun, and you can find some shade, it’s ok not to use any sunscreen. Otherwise, make sure you have one. You are right, you can use coconut oil if you don’t have anything else, also carrot or raspberry seed oil is great, even stronger than coconut, but bear in mind it only protects you from sunburn.

  • Hi Ola, I’ve learned so much from your post. I work in the sun most days, so it’s very good to learn about natural sunscreens. After reading this article, I think I’ll get one to protect my skin.
    I didn’t know that it’s beneficial to wear sunscreen even on a cloudy day. Thank you for the information and the products you’ve recommended.

  • Justin

    This is some great information. Thanks for clarifying the difference between natural and artificial sunscreen. I personally prefer natural anything to artificial, even it is make in a lab. I also found the explanation of UVB and UVA rays useful. I don’t remember ever learning that. Although we are about to enter winter where I live and it could be a while before I see the sun again, I will keep this information in mind along with these products. Thanks for sharing!

    • ola.young

      Hi Justin. Thanks for your comment. Just remember, even in the winter you have to protect your face. The sun is shining even you sometimes can’t see it through the clouds. If you plan to stay all day out rather put sunscreen on. Have a great day.
